Pay thaw! Theresa May lifts 1% public sector cap

UK relaxes grip on public sector pay, agrees to lift 1 pct cap

National Police Chiefs" Council lead for pay and conditions, Chief Constable Francis Habgood, said: "On average, police officer pay makes up over 50% of total force budgets, which have had real terms cuts of 18% since 2010.

Theresa May faces accusations of "divide and rule" for lifting the punishing public sector pay cap only for police officers with a 1% rise (plus a 1% bonus) and prison officers (1.7% rise) - both funded from existing budgets while medics, teachers and other public servants still facing real term decline in pay.

"The government stating that police officers have had a 32% pay rise since 2010 is a joke - and is in fact a downright lie", he said.

Just 4% of officers - new recruits starting at the bottom of the pay scale in 2010 - would have seen their pay rise in the way described by the PM, said a spokesman.

In the Commons, Jeremy Corbyn went on the attack, saying: "Does the Prime Minister understand that inflation is now 2.9 per cent? We want to reward and attract the very best police officers within the resources we have, whilst making the right decisions for the economy overall".

Following a proposed one percent pay increase for police and prison staff, British Prime Minister (PM) Theresa May has come under fire from top law enforcement officials regarding the source of funding.

"This can not be right", said Mr Macleod. "This smacks of double standards".

This is another embarrassing example of the former Home Secretary's fraught relationship with the police force that should be able to rely on her.

"In the last few days the government's position on the public sector pay cap has changed so many times it is hard to keep up and impossible to trust a word the Conservatives say on the issue".

TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady branded the increases for police and prison officers "pathetic", on a day when the latest inflation figures showed prices rising by 2.9% annually.

Earlier this month, The Sun revealed Mrs May had agreed to end the pay cap to try to reconnect with voters after her election humiliation. "We run the risk here of letting communities down, putting officers at risk and ultimately risking national security and I would ask you to seriously consider the budget and the level of cuts over the next five years." .

And DUP MPs signalled to ministers that they were going to back a Labour motion on Wednesday, which urged May to "end the public sector pay cap in the NHS".
