Funeral Held For Houston Officer Who Died In Harvey Flooding

Perez drowned in floodwaters from Harvey while trying to report for duty on August 29.

Following the mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston, Police Chief Art Acevedo compared Sergeant Perez's commitment to his faith and the city of Houston, to those in this community which came together to help those in need during the hurricane.

Police sergeant Steve Perez is being laid to rest today in the Houston National Cemetery.

Perez is survived by his wife, Cheryl, an adult son and daughter and extended family. From there, a procession will escort Sgt. Perez's casket to the burial site. Outside, hundreds of police officers gathered for the presentation of the flag to the Perez family. "We thought it was important to support them" said Torrez.

In the predawn hours on September 3, Perez, 60, drove two and a half hours, seeking a safe route in order to report to duty.

The chief said they had used different strategies, techniques and technology to get to Perez, but they knew it was a recovery mission at that point, and would have been too risky to retrieve his body.

"Steve is the 114th officer in HPD history to lose their life and you know, this will pass, we'll be stronger but we'll never forget this sacrifice", said Acevedo.

"And I'll never forget that Monday night it was raining, they led us to the right intersection to the right underpass and the toughest part of all of that, the emotion for me was I had to make the decision to leave him there that night, in that muddy water, that was tough", said Acevedo.
