Selena Gomez Tears Up Talking About a Family Killed During Hurricane Harvey

In a pre-recorded section for the Hand in Hand pledge drive on Tuesday night (Sept. 12), Selena Gomez related the tale of the Saldivar family - whose van was submerged in the surges of Hurricane Harvey - getting unmistakably passionate while describing the awful occasions.

Selena Gomez broke down in tears while telling the story of the Saldivar family which drowned in the floods of Hurricane Harvey.

Gomez told the devastating story of a man named Sammy Saldivar, whose family was killed during Harvey. Their van is swept into the bayou. "Only Sammy Saldivar manages to survive", Selena explained. Selena grew up approximately 250 miles per hour away from the Saldivar home.

Gomez got teary talking about the family, saying, "Their story affected all who heard it". And no matter who we are, the differences we have suddenly did not seem to matter. Since that day we have joined together - neighbor helping neighbor, without stopping to think about race, religion or anything else.

Selena shared the harrowing tale of how Sammy Saldivar tried to escape the rising floodwaters with his elderly parents and their four great-grandchildren who ranged in age between six and 16.

The Washinton Post reported on the Saldivar family after the storm. He heard the children screaming for help as the van went under water. He said, "I know they went to heaven holding hands".
