WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton is leaving the company to start his own foundation

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton said on Tuesday that he is leaving the company and plans to start his own non-profit organisation as per a report in Recode. Acton is one of the key players behind the messaging app's wide and consistent success housing over a Billion users.

"After 8 years at WhatsApp, I have chose to move on and start a new chapter in my life", Acton said in a Facebook post early on Wednesday. Brian will leave the company in November as reported by media outlets.

"I am very fortunate at my age to have the flexibility to take new risks and focus on what I'm passionate about", Acton, 45, wrote in a blog post.

"I have made a decision to start a non-profit focused at the intersection of nonprofit, technology and communications", he added. "I'll have more to share in the coming months".

The big development was confirmed by Acton himself in a Facebook post. "I'm proud of what our team has accomplished in only a few years, and it's humbling to see that so many people rely on WhatsApp every day.", he added. His role won't be filled by any one employee, according to a company spokesperson.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014, for $19 billion - $4 billion in cash, $12 billion in stock, plus $3 billion in RSUs (Restricted stock units are not fully transferable until certain conditions have been met).
