McConnell Skeptical About Ending US Debt Ceiling

Trump, Heller and other Washington, DC lawmakers call for simplifying the tax code

Trump, Heller and other Washington, DC lawmakers call for simplifying the tax code

The Trump administration is pushing for a simpler tax code and lower rates, but has said it will leave the details of the proposal to Congress.

"Any chance to talk with the president about issues important to North Dakota is an opportunity I welcome", said Heitkamp.

He added "I think the wealthy will be pretty much where they are, pretty much where they are ..."

"What that means is that businesses, farmers, ranchers, if you spend money on a capital investment, you can immediately expense that and deduct it from what you're paying taxes on", Cruz said.

The meeting comes a week after Trump agreed to a Democrat-crafted plan to push back the debt ceiling deadline for three months, siding with Schumer and Pelosi over the objections of his Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Republican congressional leaders.

Republicans said they want a spending cap and Democrats proposed raising the state sales tax, which could be off the table now.

President Donald Trump is preaching bipartisanship as he meets with a group of moderate members of Congress from both parties Wednesday. "We're looking at the middle class and we're looking at jobs".

The tax overhaul principles Republicans have put forth envision slashes in the corporate tax rate and individual tax rates.

Congressional aides said Schumer and Pelosi were expected to discuss protections for young immigrants and stabilizing the health care markets.

One thing President Trump knows, as do many mainstream Americans, is that most of America who lives and works outside of the D.C. Beltway is fed up with partisan politics.

Mr. Trump made clear that he's more interested in tax cuts for the middle class, not a plan that would benefit the wealthy.

Donnelly's statement to the press after the dinner did not include any comments on whether he'll support the president's plans on tax reform.

"With Irma and Harvey devastation, Tax Cuts and Tax Reform is needed more than ever before", he said.

Divisiveness and partisanship has been a hallmark of the Congress and the presidency in recent years. And that doesn't seem to be moving fast at all. "We're taking months to get consensus and getting something passed, so when we pass reform we're all working on the same page".

Trump blindsided Republican leaders last week by striking a deal with Schumer and Pelosi on the US debt limit and federal spending for three months, and also spoke to them about how to resolve the fate of 800,000 young adults brought into the United States illegally as children, the so-called Dreamers.
