Three Hurricanes at once: Irma, Jose and Katia

Tropical storms Jose, Katia upgraded to hurricane status

Tropical Storm Katia formed early Wednesday off the coast of Mexico.

While Irma was destroying islands, both Jose and Katia storms strengthened to hurricane status, bringing the number to three for the Atlantic basin.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Jose, which is a Cape Verde hurricane like Irma, remains a Category 3 over the open Atlantic with no anticipated landfall but is expected to skirt the northern Leeward Islands possibly dumping another 10 inches of rain to the already drenched region.

"Katia is embedded within weak steering currents, and the cyclone will most likely meander in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico for the next day or two", the NHC said.

Katia is NOT expected to impact Texas at this time.

State energy company Pemex has installations in and around the coast of Veracruz but has not reported any disruption to its operations there.

The trio of storms closely follow the deadly onslaught by Hurricane Harvey, which drenched the US Gulf Coast with historic rainfall and triggered widespread flooding. Isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches are possible in northern Veracruz.

The storm is centered about 105 miles east of Tampico, Mexico, and is moving east-southeast near 2 mph.

"This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain", the Miami-based NHC said. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 millibars. But the hurricane center says Katia is expected to stay offshore through Friday morning.

The government of Mexico has reportedly issued a Hurricane Watch for Veracruz, from the municipality of Tuxpan to Laguna Verde.
