President Donald Trump's top press officer will be joined by national security adviser H.R. McMaster and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley at 1:30 p.m. EDT.

The addition of the two to the briefing line-up is more than likely in response to Thursday's missile firing by North Korea and the continued escalation of tensions between it and the U.S.

In the North's most recent test, it demonstrated the ability to hit Guam, home to more than 100,000 civilians and numerous USA strategic military assets.

Mr. Trump has threatened to use military options but continues to seek a resolution using diplomatic and economic pressure.

McMaster says recently imposed United Nations sanctions on North Korea are just taking effect.

"And so, for those who have said and been commenting about the lack of a military option, there is a military option", he said.

McMaster emphasized the United States was "out of time" in regards to North Korea, and that a "military option" exists and could be used if necessary. McMaster clarified that the military option is not the preferred choice, but North Korea is not responding to worldwide pressure.

"These sanctions are just now taking effect", McMaster said.
