A USA citizen fighting for the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria has surrendered to a US-backed alliance, a defense official said on Thursday.

USA officials declined to publicly identity the American or say where he surrendered or under what circumstances, but they described him as a "known enemy combatant".

US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway told the news station the citizen was 'legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant, ' while it's unclear how long the individual was involved in the ploy.

The strike Saturday east of the Euphrates River near Dayr Az Zawr hit "a location known to the Russians to contain Syrian Democratic Forces and coalition advisers", the US -led coalition said in a press release.

The SDF entered Raqa in early June, after months of fighting to encircle the city with support from the US-led coalition against IS.

On Thursday, the chief spokesman for the USA military command referred all questions about the news.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert also confirmed during a media briefing on Thursday evening that she had no further information on the individual's circumstances.

US forces are advising them and providing air support and other backing as they push into militant territory.

Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, was captured by Kurdish forces in northern Iraq in March 2016.

Russian and U.S. battles against Islamic State in Syria have mostly stayed out of each other's way, with the Euphrates often acting as a dividing line.

This could mean that the American ISIS fighters are now slashed in numbers.

Then-FBI Director James Comey estimated in late 2015 that more than 200 Americans had tried to join the militants in Syria or provided support to those who joined.

In June, a USA man who had traveled to Raqqa in December 2015 was convicted of helping IS.

The strike occurred early Saturday, hitting an area east of the Euphrates River, near the city of Deir Ezzor.

"We consider it an insult to the Iraqi people".

The captured terrorist is not the only example for US nationals joining Daesh.
