Boris Johnson returns to Brexit debate with polemic attacking 'bottler' Remainers

The Foreign Secretary even has the gall to dredge up the fantasy of £350 million a week extra for the NHS.

Rumours coming from her own party suggested that she could be forced to step down to allow another candidate to negotiate the UK's Brexit deal.

Thus, his long essay in yesterday's Daily Telegraph, timed less than a week before what has been billed as an important Brexit speech by Theresa May on Friday in Florence, has been interpreted in the Westminster village either as an explicit leadership bid or as an attempt to plant his Brexit tanks on the prime minister's lawn.

In his blueprint, Mr Johnson says Britain will spend £350 million-a-week on the NHS, a promise that was widely criticised during the Brexit campaign.

Boris Johnson has chose to take gauntlet and challenge "premier" Theresa May with his own plan for a Brexit "glorious".

"I am here to tell you that this country will succeed in our new national enterprise, and will succeed mightily".

In the weeks following the result, Mr Johnson and other campaigners, appeared to distance themselves from the promise.

He wrote: "Once we have settled our accounts, we will take back control of roughly £350 million per week".

He added: "It would be a fine thing ... if a lot of that money went on the NHS, provided we use that cash injection to modernise and make the most of new technology".

'One of the advantages of investing in the NHS - if we combine that investment with reform - is that we can turbo charge the role of our health service in driving bioscience'.

Critics warned there is "absolutely no chance" of the £350 million pledge being delivered and said Mr Johnson was untrustworthy.

"We would not expect to pay for access to their markets any more than they would expect to pay for access to ours", he said.

May has been able to hold onto her job despite her poor electoral performance, but has been facing increasing pressure as Brexit negotiations with the European Union have stalled over the question of how much Britain must pay to leave the 28-nation bloc.

Stephen Gethins MP, SNP spokesperson on International Affairs and Europe, said: "Theresa May must make clear whether Boris Johnson is speaking for the UK Government with his latest embarrassing intervention on Brexit".

He says we will have an immigration policy that suits the United Kingdom, not slamming the door but welcoming the talent we need, from the European Union and around the world.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the comments laid bare the conflicts within May's government and cut the ground from beneath the prime minister's authority.
