Handscomb included in Australia squad as cover for injured Aaron Finch

Steve Smith says the coming one-day tour is part of the World Cup selection process

Smith however was insistent that Travis Head would be batting at number four leaving Cartwright the likely choice to open. However, Smith didn't slip another word off his lips that could reveal the playing XI for the first match.

Hilton Cartwright will make his one-day global debut and Australia will bowl first in the first ODI against India in Chennai. "We've got a spinning allrounder, we've got allrounders who take the pace off the ball so we've got a few different options".

Cartwright was presented his maiden cap by former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee and will start his one-day career in the field after India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

"It's important for someone in the top four to go on and make a big score and we've got the guys in there to do that", Smith said on Saturday.

Right-handed batsman Peter Handscomb has been included in the Australia's ODI squad as a cover for injured Aaron Finch for the five-match series against India, beginning September 17 in Chennai. "So if the wickets are the same you need someone to go on and make a really big score".

"We saw the last time we came here in 2013 it was a run-fest where 350 was around par".

All-rounder Travis Head will be in line for the No. 4 spot amid speculations of him coming out alongside David Warner as an opener; while Hilton Cartwright is all set to make a debut for the team from Down Under, hinted the Australia skipper Steve Smith.

While Handscomb has been added to the squad, Finch's absence could open an opportunity for Travis Head to open the Australian batting alongside David Warner when they face India in the first of five-match ODI series on Sunday.
