"She had been feeding recently and when they have a bigger back riding joey they leave little knots, they knot up all the fur on their mum's back from holding on and she had that on her back", Ms Brister said.

If you look closely you can see the koala hiding behind the wheel.

'I had no way of knowing whether she still had her other limbs'. "I could only see the top of her head and a paw".

There's a koala bear in there!

A terrified koala clung on to a car's axle for dear life for 10 miles after it climbed into the wheel arch.

She climbed into the auto in Adelaide, Australia.

"We weren't sure if she was pinned at first", she said.

Firefighters were forced to remove the wheel of the vehicle to free the marsupial, who had suffered only minor injuries.

"After everything she's been through, she's had so much stress and trauma, to see her just toddle off and up the tree, and now she's found the biggest fork in the tree, she's snuggled up, she's fast asleep", Brister said.

The rescue team removed the car's wheel and realised the koala wasn't stuck, but frozen with fear.

Once she released her grip Ms Brister said she had superficial wounds however was covered in oil and grease.

Ms Brister said the six-year-old koala was crying from distress, nearly as if she was "telling me about it".

We just glad the mammy survived and are hoping she finds her way back to her baby after her ordeal.

"The female was in shock for 48-hours that followed, anxious and hyper vigilant", Ms Brister recalled once she had taken the koala home.

Sadly the joey had not been recovered.
