Cela faisait 13 ans, depuis les JO d'Athènes en 2004, que le Kazakh Gennady Golovkin (35 ans) n'était plus descendu d'un ring autrement qu'en vainqueur. Le choc des titans en middleweight se fera pour les ceintures WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, et IBO de Triple G!

Et ce nul a un goût amer: la juge Adalaide Byrd qui a vu Alvarez remporter le combat, a rendu une carte de pointage de 118-110, invraisemblable pour beaucoup d'observateurs et de téléspectateurs qui se sont aussitôt déchaînés sur les réseaux sociaux.

Golovkin a été très agressif pendant le combat, mais il n'a pas été en mesure d'envoyer son adversaire au tapis.

Pour son premier combat à Las Vegas qui va lui rapporter 15 millions de dollars, le Kazakh, surnommé "GGG", a eu droit à un baptême de feu à la hauteur de la sulfureuse réputation de la capitale mondiale du jeu et des casinos.

Golovkin, qui ne cachait pas sa surprise, est resté beau joueur.

Le début du match était à l'avantage du Mexicain Alvarez, mais Golovkin trouvait ses marques dans le quatrième round en l'expédiant régulièrement dans les cordes.

Golovkin a continué sa marche en avant, touchant au visage Alvarez avec une gauche à la 6e reprise. En contre-attaque, Alvarez s'est souvent adossé aux câbles, échangeant coup pour coup avec le Kazakh.

Leur combat, attendu depuis trois ans, devait sacrer pour beaucoup le meilleur boxeur en activité, toutes catégories confondues, mais il s'était fait voler la vedette il y a trois semaines, déjà à Las Vegas, par le duel controversé entre la légende de la boxe Floyd Mayweather et la star des arts martiaux mixtes (MMA), Conor McGregor.

Après 12 rounds intenses, c'est toutefois la décision des juges qui aura été la plus surprenante en rendant un verdict nul alors que Golovkin paraissait avoir dominé assez clairement son adversaire mexicain. "J'ai senti sa puissance".
