A timeline of events issued by the nursing home shows administrators repeatedly called Florida Power & Light and state officials after a transformer powering its air conditioning system went out during the storm on Sunday.

About 1.5 million homes and businesses in Florida and Georgia remained without power on Friday after Hurricane Irma, including 46 of Florida's almost 700 nursing homes caught in the deadly storm's path. FPL, the state's biggest electric company, said nearly 1.1 million customers had no power, down from more than 3.6 million on Monday.

September 16, 2017: Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) today announced that as of this evening, it has restored service to slightly more than 2 million customers within the first day of Hurricane Irma's exit from its service territory.

The unprecedented outages - knocking out power to more than half of Florida's homes and businesses - also unleashed a cascade effect across the region. Something they have been saying since "day one" was how Hurricane Irma was going to be different than Hurricane Matthew because Volusia wouldn't be one of the few counties affected.

In Manatee County, 34,970 Florida Power and Light customers and 279 cooperatives customers were still in the dark, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

"As we complete restoration on critical infrastructure facilities and primary power lines, we're moving more and more of our teams into neighborhoods to fix power lines and local transformers in order to bring light back to every community we serve". More than 118,500 customers had been restored by Friday morning - 19 percent of its service - but 33,000 were still out of power. This reflects the likelihood that some buildings were too damaged to have power turned back on safely. "We will be restoring power day and night".

"Power, power, power", Gov. Rick Scott said. "We're attacking it on all fronts", he said. Both reactors at its Turkey Point facility, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Miami, remained shut early Tuesday, while both reactors at its St. Lucie plant, about 120 miles (190 km) north of Miami, were operating at full power. "There is nothing there can be done more than what I think we're doing and definitely what the power companies are doing", Dinneen said. "We ask for the patience of our customers as we undertake one of the most challenging rebuild and restoration efforts in our company's history". In the case of Irma, due to the increased preparation by the county after last year's storm, Dinneen said Volusia was not one of the worst affected counties in the state.
