Her campaign has been spearheaded by Maryam Nawaz, the couple's daughter and Nawaz' political heir apparent, in her first real foray into electoral politics.

Yaqub has little chance of success given that Kulsoom Nawaz, Sharif's wife, is expected to easily win Sunday's vote.

Kulsoom is in London where she is undergoing treatment for her throat cancer.

"Meanwhile, half the children of this country are malnourished", Khan, who is a former cricket star and the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party head, told a rally on Saturday.

Unofficial results on Sunday showed the ousted premier's wife leading with nearly 5,000 votes against Yasmin, a gynecologist from the area.

Sharif, who has held office as prime minister on three occasions but never completed a full term, has already been summoned by an anti-corruption court in a corruption case on September 19. "PTI has not only fought well but is in the lead so far from a constituency where PML-N has always won".

"Lahories will elect my mother, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, in the court of people and reject the court's decision against my father", Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Sharif, said, adding that today's verdict is on disqualification of her father. Buntings and posters of Sharif and his family have flooded the area.

The ECP said a total of 350,000 ballot papers are being printed for the by-poll, where 324,786 voters are registered to cast their vote.

The constituency, home to nearly half a million of Lahore's 11 million residents, is deep in the heart of the old city, and is considered a Sharif stronghold.

The election is being contested by all the major parties as well as two new Islamist opposition parties. "You have to decide who you are going to support, whether you are with the judiciary, or with a dacoit".

Sharif, 67, had resigned after being disqualified.

Neither party has a realistic prospect of winning, but both are likely to primarily draw supporters from the religious base of the PML-N.

Not all exchanges on Sunday were as friendly, however, with minor scuffles reported between PML-N and PTI activists off the city's main Mall road.

The Milli Muslim League has not yet been allowed to formally register as a political party, so their candidate has to run as an independent. "Everyone in the USA said it would be her victory, and they all proved wrong".
