Modified champion Ted Christopher died in a plane crash Saturday afternoon in Guilford, Connecticut.

Christopher was not excessively involved in NASCAR's top three series, competing in just six career Cup Series races with a top finish of 31st place, 21 career Busch (now Xfinity) Series races with a top finish of 8th place and two career Truck Series races with a top finish of 7th place. He had been scheduled to drive the No. 82 Horton Avenue Materials Chevrolet at New York's Riverhead Raceway on Sat Sep.

"We are all saddened to learn of the tragic plane crash this afternoon that claimed the lives of NASCAR driver Ted Christopher and the aircraft's pilot", said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France.

'He will be missed throughout the racing community, in the garage and, especially, in the hearts of his many fans.

The racing community is mourning the loss of a veteran modified NASCAR driver, Ted Christopher, they said was one of the victims in a plane crash.

The pilot has not yet been identified, but family members confirmed the tragic news to NASCAR. Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends, family and fans of Ted Christopher through these trying times.

As a championship driver on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and New England short tracks, Christopher was a throwback to NASCAR's roots. He will be remembered as one of the greatest Modified drivers of all time.

Christopher's death brought tributes from others in the racing world. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow competitors at this very hard time".
