Protests over a USA circuit court judge's decision to acquit a white former police officer of murder in the shooting death of a black man caught on tape have spread in St Louis, Missouri. Bricks and bottles were thrown at the officers, who responded with tear gas and pepper-spray balls. "But this is a protest that addresses injustices not only happening here in St Louis but around the country". "However, after dark, many agitators began to destroy property and assault police officers", O'Toole said in a video statement alongside Mayor Lyda Krewson.

"Orders to disperse were given numerous times".

So far, eight police officers were seriously injured when a peaceful protest turned ugly.

On Friday, a judge acquitted former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley of murder charges concerning the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith, St. Louis' KMOX reports.

Stockley originally said he wanted to kill Smith - whom police had pursued on suspicion of him taking part in a drug deal - in the wake of a vehicle chase that lasted for around three miles before he and his fellow officers caught up to Smith.

Which had sparked a protest movement across country against killings of black suspects by white police officers.

Hundreds have marched in the Missouri city for a second day, chanting "Black lives matter!"

Police on Saturday put up barricades around the courthouse and police headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, bracing for more protests that are expected to come in days. She stated, "I believe we offered sufficient evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Jason Stockley meant to kill Mr. Smith".

Stockley believed that Smith was armed, defence attorneys said, and a gun was found in the vehicle.

During the trial, which began with opening statements on August 1, the prosecution argued that Stockley meant to kill, fired a "kill shot" and planted a gun following the fatal shooting.
