Lewis Hamilton was delighted to make the most of his good fortune at the Singapore Grand Prix after Formula One world championship title rival Sebastian Vettel crashed out in a dramatic race.

All three retired on the first lap and it could prove to be particularly disastrous for Ferrari, who have lost big ground in both World Championships as eventual race victor Lewis Hamilton opened up a 28-point lead.

It is a crucial pole for Vettel on one of the three hardest tracks to overtake on in Formula One. The field opened up perfectly for the British driver to seal his third straight win, seventh of the season and 60th overall.

"I think there was damage on the vehicle already and then it didn't matter, to be honest", the German told Britain's Channel 4 television. "Who would have known that would happen", Hamilton said.

He now has a commanding lead over Vettel with just six races remaining. I needed it to rain and as soon as it did I knew where I was going to finish. "To come out of it in the other direction is a shock".

"Guys what can I say - what a turn-around today!"

"But we didn't have the pace we showed on Friday, we struggled to look after the tyres - when able to punch out a good laptime, I couldn't maintain it, whereas Lewis could answer and answer again".

Carlos Sainz Jr secured a career best fourth place finish for Toro Rosso and led Sergio Perez across the line who finished in fifth place for Force India. This is the first abandonment of the season for the German.

"I have an idea, if we were to do the race again and set the auto up different, something we did on the vehicle would have helped us if we went the other way for how the conditions are".

The treacherous conditions might have made Vettel a bit nervous, even on a track where he holds the record with four wins.

Verstappen said he tried to avoid the incident, but there was nothing he could do. It was a needless move so early on, and squeezed Verstappen and Raikkonen for room, causing them to collide on the inside. "Hopefully the next races are more in our direction". "Fantastic job with the team strategy", Hamilton said over the radio, before leaping out of his auto and hugging his engineers.
