A powerful typhoon made landfall in southern Japan over the weekend, bringing strong winds and heavy rain and causing severe disruption to the country's transport system. The 18 Typhoon of the Pacific season has resulted in way more chaos in many areas of Japan.

The typhoon was expected to weaken into an extratropical depression Monday night as it heads toward Sakhalin, but the heavy rain and wind are expected to continue. In Hokkaido particularly, up to 80 mm of rain per hour could be expected.

Typhoon Talim, with central atmospheric pressure at 975 hectopascals, had winds at a speed of 30 metres per second near its centre, with gusts reaching almost 45 meters per second, reports Xinhua news agency. With an atmospheric pressure of 975 hectopascals, it was packing winds of up to 162 kph.

In Kagawa Prefecture, located in the northeast of Shikoku Island, an 86-year-old woman was killed when her home was leveled by a landslide, local media reported.

A man in Hiroshima prefecture was also reportedly injured, and a 71-year-old man in Oita prefecture was reportedly missing.

In Kochi Prefecture, also on Shikoku Island, a 60-year-old man was found dead inside a vehicle sunken in a river, media reports said Monday.

Three men went missing in separate incidents across Kochi and Oita prefectures after going outside to check on a ship and rice fields, prompting police to launch searches.

In Yamagata Prefecture in northeastern Japan, a bullet train hit a fallen tree and briefly suspended service.
