Matthew Broderick is set to narrate A Christmas Story Live! for Fox this December

Matthew Broderick will narrate the musical version of beloved US holiday film A Christmas Story when it hits TV in America in December (17).

The last thing I saw Broderick in was last year's Manchester by the Sea, in which he had a distracting role that played against the amiable characters for which he's best known.

The role was voiced by radio announcer Jean Shepherd in the original 1983 film, though the stage musical adaptation on which Fox's broadcast will be based features the character framing the story in-person.

The film is narrated by the adult Ralphie Parker who is reliving his childhood as he shares the hilarious account.

The musical rendition of "Christmas" story had a short Broadway run in 2013 and has fielded touring productions.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will compose new songs for the special.

A Christmas Story was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. He's starred in films, television, and on Broadway, making him the ideal choice for the highly anticipated musical version of A Christmas Story Live! that will air on Fox December 17, 2017. Marc Platt, who executive produced Fox's critical and commercial success Grease Live in 2016, will serve in the same capacity on A Christmas Story.

At this point, young Ralphie Parker has not been cast.
