The U.S. Coast Guard says a woman and two children were rescued from a boat that went missing off Puerto Rico during Hurricane Maria, but a man died aboard the vessel.

The Coast Guard in Miami received an alert and a distress call stating that the boat - the Ferrel - was disabled and adrift in 20ft (6m) waves and 99mph winds on Wednesday.

A fourth family member, an adult man, was reported deceased inside the ship, which the Coast Guard said was "inaccessible" to search and rescue crews.

Rescuers were in contact with the 146ft research vessel, but lost radio contact as conditions worsened - hampering the initial search effort. Late Wednesday night a Coast Guard plane found the capsized vessel and a British naval helicopter responded to the scene.

The Coast Guard - alongside the USA and British Royal Navies - first launched a search for the vessel after receiving a distress call on Wednesday morning, while Maria was battering the area.
