Karti Chidambaram went abroad to close bank accounts CBI tells Supreme Court

The CBI on Friday informed the Supreme Court that Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram, went abraod only for the goal of closing his bank accounts and transferred the amounts to other accounts. Wanting to place the documents concerning its investigation in a sealed cover, Mehta told the bench that during the investigation, various other issues have surfaced and clarity on other illegalities are expected. "But what we found is that there are several accounts that he closed when he went overseas", Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta told a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

"We issued a notice and asked him how many bank accounts he has".

"Let me say what is contained in the sealed cover". Sibal said Karti was not asked a single question about foreign bank accounts during his questioning by the CBI following the SC direction to his client to appear before the agency.

The Supreme Court on Friday said Karti can not leave the country for now as the court will hold a further hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) plea on October 4. "I don't want to say all this as it will embarrass him, but I have been compelled". They interrogated me (Karti), but not a single question was asked on this.

"By quoting CBI as the source, the lie does not become the truth", he said reacting to CBI's claim in the court during a hearing on the look out notice against Karti which he has challenged. While INX Media had approval for foreign investment worth R4.62 crore, it had managed to raise around R305 crore in 2007 through "influence in the finance ministry".

Mehta also informed that the CBI had filed a special leave petition challenging the Madras High Court order which said it had territorial jurisdiction to deal with a petition filed by Karti for quashing of the case but a forum for convenience for raising the issue was the Delhi High Court since the FIR was filed at the Patiala House Courts here.

His father has long insisted that Karti is being targeted by the NDA government only because he is his son but "the real target is me".
