She is co-chairing the NY state recovery effort, and announced her donation at a press conference on September 24 alongside NY governor Andrew Cuomo, who had just returned from the island. It will encourage residents statewide to donate goods and will raise funds from the business community for organizations in Puerto Rico.

Washington D.C.: "What's foremost in my mind and many others, is trying to figure out the best way to help", said Jennifer Lopez as she announced she was donating 1 million dollars from the proceeds of her Las Vegas show to aid hurricane relief in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Amid the dizzying series of natural disasters to occur over the past few weeks was Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm that left all of Puerto Rico without power, potentially for months.

The singer was born in NY but her parents are Puerto Rican. "Together, we can help rebuild our island and the Caribbean".

"Instead of arguing with football players", Cuomo said, "put the politics aside and focus on the Americans that are in desperate need". "The devastation is beyond belief", she said.

The island's governor, Ricardo Rossello, said at a media briefing on Saturday that the estimated damages were "well north" of the $7 billion to $8 billion estimate of damages that Puerto Rico sustained from Hurricane Georges in 1998.

Lopez, co-chair of the Empire State Relief & Recovery Effort, urged people to support Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Mexico with donations and contributions, assuring audience members that there are already two commercial planes filled with supplies and generators waiting for air clearance to depart, land and unload.
