Sensex Down 284 Points On Weak Global Cues; Nifty Nears 9850

The BSE Sensex lost 266 points and NSE Nifty index breached the psychological level of 9,900 soon after opening. The broader Nifty 50 index also fell, lost as much as 169 points to fell below 10,000 mark to 9,952.8 points.

The Sensex traded at 31,597.27 at 1238 hours, down 325.17 points, or 1.02 percent. The barometer has slumped 501.22 points in the previous four sessions.

Sensex opened marginally higher but very quickly swung into the red while Nifty extended losses to open lower on Monday as most of the Asian shares fell in the early trade except Japan following the concerns about China's economy.

Geopolitical tensions on North Korea and continuous FII outflows led to nervous moments ahead of derivatives expiry due on Thursday.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 1,241.73 crore on Friday, provisional data released by the stock exchanges showed.

Shares of Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, IOC, Adani Ports, L&T, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank took down the benchmark BSE Sensex by 0.7-3 per cent.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.04% down on Friday.
