US Flies Bomber Near North Korean Border in Latest Show of Force

U.S. Air Force bombers flew over worldwide waters east of North Korea on Saturday as tension simmers between the two nations and their respective leaders, and a tremor earlier struck close to North Korea's nuclear test site.

The Pentagon flew its Air Force B-1B Lancer strategic bombers Saturday east of North Korea, near the demilitarized zone, demonstrating U.S. President Donald Trump's resolve.

The Pentagon said B-1B bombers from Guam and F-15 fighter escorts from Okinawa in Japan flew the mission in global airspace over the waters east of North Korea.

It was meant to underscore "the seriousness with which we take (North Korea's) reckless behavior", said spokeswoman Dana White in a statement.

The U.S. displayed its military might by flying long-range bombers and fighter jets off the coast of North Korea yesterday, while the belligerent nation's foreign minister called President Trump a "mentally deranged person" whose insults could spark rockets to rain down across the "entire U.S. mainland". "We are prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the United States homeland and our allies", the statement said. Pyongyang, later, on its state-run propaganda site, unveiled a *doctored photo in which its missiles are launched toward a B-1B and a F-35, and later the jets engulfed in fire.

According to the U.S. Air Force, supersonic B-1B Lancers are able to "carry the largest conventional payload of both guided and unguided weapons" and "can rapidly deliver massive quantities of precision and non-precision weapons". Similarly, two U.S. B-1B bombers were deployed to the peninsula with four F-35B jets on August 31, and escorted by four South Korean F-15K fighters.

"The United States is ready, willing and able but hopefully, this will not be necessary", he said during the speech.

The South Korean Air Force did not accompany the B-1Bs this time around, according to the Blue House, because the US bombers flew over global airspace.

The North Korean minister said that the sanctions imposed on his nation by the UN will have no effect on Pyongyang's resolve to develop its nuclear weapons, with the ultimate goal being "balance of power with the United States".

"We can't have mad men out there shooting rockets all over the place", said Trump in a rally in Arizona Friday. "And by the way, Rocket Man should have been handled a long time ago", Trump said, pointing the finger at Barack Obama and his predecessors.

North Korea's nuclear tests to date have all been underground, and experts say an atmospheric test, which would be the first since one by China in 1980, would be proof of the success of its weapons program.

On Thursday, Trump announced more economic sanctions against the impoverished and isolated country, targeting foreign companies that deal with the North.

The action escalated tensions with the USA and North Korea's neighbors, and last week its foreign minister said the regime's options included testing a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

This isn't the first demonstration of force from the U.S. military in recent weeks. "Once we can assess the nature of this threat, the president will make a decision regarding the appropriate actions". "In a warning to Pyongyang, Trump said 'the United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea".
