'Jaffa quake' causes Twitter outrage as McVitie's cuts pack size

But supermarkets are still selling the product for the same price as the old 12-packs which is hitting customers with a rise of around 17 per cent

Apparently some retailers are still selling the smaller boxes for the same size as the older packs, hoping that customers won't notice or that some people don't obsessively count the number of remaining cakes per pack to ensure other family members aren't stealing any.

A spokesperson for McVitie's, which is owned by United Biscuits, told The Sun that the number of Jaffa Cakes in some boxes was being cut from 12 to 10, reducing the overall weight of the packet from 146.4 grams to 122 grams.

The decision has been dubbed an "abomination" by fans and some shoppers have compared the news to Brexit and the possible North Korean nuclear war.

Jaffa Cakes have become the latest chocolate treat to be downsized - sparking an "outrage" on social media. "12 down to 10?"

Taking to Twitter, one person condemned the move, asking McVitie's: "Don't you think this world is cruel enough already?"

Another tweeter wrote directly to McVitie's and demanded to know whether the confectionery company will compensate shoppers by making the size of the actual biscuits bigger.

Ocado is selling the 10-packs for £1.19 - the same price as the old ones.

A McVitie's spokesman added: "There is no change in the size, shape or weight of individual cakes in the McVitie's Jaffa Cake range".

But, while maker's McVitie's says it has also cut the recommended retail price to reflect the change, "that does not appear to have been recognised by supermarkets", says Yahoo Finance. These changes represent the same price per cake, however, pricing ultimately remains at the sole discretion of retailers.

But Jaffa Cake lovers have taken to Twitter to express their feelings - and they aren't best pleased.
