President Donald Trump issued a new open-ended travel ban Sunday that saw North Korea, Venezuela and Chad among a list of eight countries cited for poor security and lack of cooperation with us authorities.

"As president, I must act to protect the security and interests of the United States and its people", Trump said.

"Making America safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we can not safely vet", Trump tweeted on Sunday evening.

The Department of Homeland Security has recommended the president impose the new, targeted restrictions on foreign nationals from countries it says refuse to share sufficient information with the United States or haven't taken necessary security precautions. After that date, the new restrictions will begin.

The president hinted that the changes were coming in a tweet after a crude bomb exploded on a London Underground train last week: "The travel ban into the USA should be far larger, tougher and more specific".

The proclamation, which will go into effect on October 18, expands the list of countries to include residents from the following countries: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Chad, Venezuela and North Korea.

Walt Wallace - a traveler from Richmond, Va., who was traveling through Atlanta's airport Sunday - said he understood the security issues involved in the travel ban.

The new rules would not have a stated end date, with countries facing the potential of being added or removed from the list at any time, according to the Journal, which cited people familiar with the process.

But the officials described the addition of the two countries to Trump's travel restrictions as the result of a purely objective review.

Citizens of eight countries will face new restrictions on entry to the USA under a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on Sunday.

The restriction on incoming North Koreans comes less than a month after the United States chose to ban all non-essential U.S.travel to the Kim Jong Un regime that does not serve the "national interest".

The new order could fall short of a complete ban, instead tailoring travel restrictions on a country-by-country basis. Senior administration officials said Sunday they would announce plans for next fiscal year's refugee resettlements in the coming days.

"The inclusion of those countries, Venezuela and North Korea, was about the fact that those governments are simply not compliant with our basic security requirements".

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Sunday laying out travel restrictions for eight countries, including five that were subject to the previous travel ban, marking the latest chapter in the administration's efforts to limit entry to the USA for certain foreign nationals.

The original travel ban grew out of candidate Trump's demand for "extreme vetting" of travelers, particularly those from Muslim countries.

But the countries that remain on the list either were unable or, in some cases, unwilling to cooperate.

The ban on citizens of the six countries was to last 90 days; the ban on refugees was to last 120 days.

Officials speaking on background stressed that the decision was taken after an extensive review of high-risk countries by the Department of Homeland Security, which were all given the opportunity to improve their security standards.

In explaining how the administration came to single out these eight countries, officials said many governments already met USA requests - using secure biometric passports, for example, and willingly passing along terrorism and criminal-history information.
