Banwari Lal Purohit was earlier appointed as the Governor of Assam by the President on August 17, 2016.

He will be a full-time Governor of TN, and another Governor has been appointed for the state of Assam.

President Ram Nath Kovind announced the appointment of five new governors on Saturday.

With governor failing to call for a trust vote, the DMK moved the Madras HC. In the past, Prasad has been a Bihar MLC for 18 years out of which he led the Opposition for 5 years. After K Rosaiah demitted office in 2016, Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao was given additional charge of Tamil Nadu and since then was shuttling between Mumbai and Chennai, capital of a state in political turmoil.

Born on April 16, 1940 in Vidharba region, Purohit studied at Bishop Cotton School and in Rajasthan. He was elected from the Nagpur East Assembly segment in 1978 and from Nagpur South constituency in 1980.

A breakaway faction threatens to dethrone chief minister E Palanisami. He has represented the Congress twice and the BJP once. He is also the managing editor of English daily Hitavada, founded in 1911 by Gopal Krishna Gokhle. He has been associated with many social, charitable, religious and sports organisations and had served as a member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Home Affairs, a member of the Standing Committee on Defence, and a member of the Public Sector Undertaking Committee. Jagdish Mukhi (75), a former Delhi minister who was the Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, fills his post in Assam.

Ganga Prasad, who becomes the Meghalaya governor, was leader of Opposition for five years in the Bihar Legislative Council and leader of the Council during the previous NDA rule.

Former MP from Aligarh and BJP's national vice-president, Satya Pal Malik, has been appointed as the governor of Bihar, a post that had fallen vacant after Ram Nath Kovind was nominated as the BJP's presidential candidate in June.
