Researchers Claim, Female Surgeons Are Better Than Male Surgeons…

So if you have a choice of surgeon, should you opt for a woman?

The American Medical Association has more about gender differences among medical specialties. Surgery has always been a male-dominated occupation: first because few women enrolled in medical school, and then because they weren't perceived (by male surgeons, no less) to have the temperament needed to make the life-and-death decisions required in an OR.

The researchers, from the University of Toronto, looked at 104,630 patients who had surgery between 2007 and 2015. Surgeons were matched for age, experience, volume and hospital.

The researchers also matched the number of patients handled by each surgeon as much as feasible to account for the truth that sometimes surgeons might have faced hard or more complicated cases.

It was also found that when it came to experiencing complications or the need for readmission, the patients of female surgeons did better than those of male surgeons.

This is not the first time a study has found that a doctor's gender may influence patient outcomes.

New research claims that patients operated on by female surgeons have lower death rates than those treated by male surgeons.

The authors attribute the favorable patient outcomes to the female doctors' ability to communicate and engage with their patients to ensure compliance with medications and therapy, their adeptness at collaborating with colleagues and their tendency to adhere to guidelines when treating patients. The researchers on the study did everything to equalize the comparisons between male and female surgeons.

But there are likely other contributors involved as well, since surgery is typically dependent on the skill of the surgeon and his or her ability to assess a person's likelihood of surviving or developing complications.

Dr Raj Satkunasivam, who led the study, said that the difference could be because of the way women deliver care. Still, the data are compelling enough that they deserve to be repeated and investigated further. "Once we understand those differences, we can potentially apply them to train surgeons better, and instill those qualities in all surgeons to improve outcomes for everyone". This is not only great for equality, but also because if you have a female surgeon, you are less likely to die within a month of your operation.

Although Satkunasivam does advice that one should not let gender be the deciding factor when choosing a surgeon, but select them based on your relationship with them, what their physician recommends and one's personal research.
