Royal Mail and CWU having their day in court

But the workers are determined to keep fighting-and say bosses' action has only strengthened their resolve.

Royal Mail's application for an injunction to stop the planned industrial action by members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) is set to be heard in court this morning.

But the High Court today sided with Royal Mail's contention that the proposed industrial action was in breach of a side agreement mandating further actions must first take place.

But Royal Mail bosses ran to the high court for an injunction that delays the action for at least seven weeks.

In a statement to the stock market on Thursday, Royal Mail said that the court's decision had confirmed that any strike action prior to completion of agreed dispute resolution procedures would be unlawful.

CWU disagreed, calling Royal Mail's legal challenge "underhanded" and "a deliberate attempt to misinterpret and use the agreement to stop postal workers exercising our right to strike".

Update: 17:50: Here's a video from Royal Mail explains that it's business as usual as negotiations continue.

But CWU deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger slammed Royal Mail for "playing politics" rather than engaging with the union to reach an agreement.

Royal Mail workers had meant to strike over pensions, pay and jobs.

Union members voted by 89 percent for strikes in a ballot that ended last week-a sign of the widespread anger among postal workers.

Granting the order, Mr Justice Supperstone said he considered "the strike call to be unlawful and the defendant is obliged to withdraw its strike call until the external mediation process has been exhausted". "We're going in there with a 90% vote for action and whatever happens today we'll be walking out of here with a 90% vote for action". "Royal Mail can not ignore the size of that ballot result". The last mass industrial action among postal workers was in 2009.

CWU activists have to keep the momentum up for a huge national strike-and trade unionists everywhere have to show postal workers they have support.
