Royal Dutch Shell, a leading global oil and natural gas producer, will purchase a top European operator of electric vehicle charging stations in a push to roll out the technology at its service stations.

NewMotion, launched in 2009, now has more than 30,000 private charge points across the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK.

It is the first deal in electric mobility for Shell, which has said it expects roughly a quarter of the world's vehicle fleet to be electric by 2040.

Shell's Vice-President for New Fuels, Matthew Tipper, says Thursday that the deal will give customers "flexibility to charge their electric vehicles at home, work and on the go".

Shell has insisted it is planning for the day when demand for oil starts to fade.

"We're starting to provide electric-vehicle fast-charging on Shell retail sites and working on smart charging to help the electricity grid cope with the demands of battery electric vehicles".
