(Ecofin Agency) - The will be no elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) before 2019.

The 15-member council agreed on a renewed message for the swift and full implementation of the December 31, 2016 agreement, which is essential to a credible electoral process and to the peace and stability of the DRC, Delattre told reporters after closed-door Security Council consultations.

Kabila's term of office expired last December but he refused to leave, saying elections could not take place because most voters had not been registered. He vowed that they will fight against it and make sure elections are held this year.

Delattre said the Security Council also showed interest in a thorough strategic review of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC, which is known by its French acronym of Monusco, particularly with regard to the protection of civilians and support for the electoral process in the DRC. "We are very much concerned about any further delay beyond this year".

Dozens of people died previous year in protests against Kabila's refusal to step down at the end of his term.

As a result, tensions between the two parties should soon resurface.

Following a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, French Ambassador Francois Delattre called on Kinshasa to quickly release a full timetable for what he said must be "credible" elections.
