Six Egyptian army personnel killed in North Sinai militant attack: Spox

Six Egyptian soldiers were killed today when terrorists attacked a security checkpoint with hand bombs and firearms in the restive Al-Arish city in North Sinai, the Army said.

Army forces are now combing the area to arrest the militants, who attacked the army personnel with grenades and automatic fire and then fled.

Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a deadly militant insurgency since mid-2013, when Mohamed Morsi, the country's first freely-elected president, was ousted and imprisoned in a bloody military coup.

A number of militants were killed and injured when the army personnel returned fire, the statement added.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed since then.

Security searched the area and chased the gunmen, it added.

Egypt is fighting an insurgency against Islamist militants affiliated with Islamic State in the Sinai Peninsula where hundreds of security forces have been killed since Mursi's ouster.
