IGP Sues Saraki, Senate Over N120b Bribery Allegations

An All Progressives Congress (APC) senator and a former police officer, who represents Bauchi Central senatorial district, Isah Misau, had accused the IGP of being involved in sharp practices amounting to about N20 billion. Misau said the IG collected about N10bn monthly from some firms and highly-placed Nigerians for giving them security cover.

However the IGP had denied all the claims and described Misau as a disaster, just as the Force Headquarters accused Misau of leaving the force with forged retirement papers.

The senator is also accused of making false statements that police officers pay N2.5 million to get special promotion and posting and also claiming that N10 billion is being received by Idris from oil companies and banks.

He had argued that the level of corruption being perpetrated by Idris was so alarming and capable of undermining the anti-corruption stance of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the suit filed on Thursday, the IGP is seeking an order restraining the committee to sit or invite him until the determination of the suit.

According to the Police boss, a serving Senator, Isa Misau, while raising matter of urgent national importance between September and October, 2017 accused him of mounting road blocks across Nigeria with the goal of extorting money from unsuspecting motorists.

Idris also stated that Misau accused him of having "unwholesome relationship with female officers in the force".

When Anyanwu was asked by journalists yesterday if his committee would go ahead with the investigation, as the AGF had filed a suit against Misau on behalf of the IGP, his reply was: "the committee or the Senate is not a party to the suit".

"Without the 1st respondent (Saraki), having regard to the relevant constitutional requirements in respect of the 2nd respondent's role in investigations of allegations, he, in reaction to these frivolous allegations, quickly constituted a committee consisting members of the 2nd Respondent to look into the matter".

He added, "The said committee so constituted is acting ultra vires, unconstitutional, null and void".

This came as the Federal Government had on Tuesday, through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, initiated two separate set of charges against Misau.

"A declaration that the sitting and other conduct of such constituted committee to investigate the allegations against Mr. Idris are unconstitutional, null and void".
