Grand Prix of Portland set for Labor Day 2018

IndyCar racing is returning to Portland International Raceway in 2018.

Twenty-three drivers will compete in next year's race, which is scheduled for August 31-Sept. 2.

The race will take place over the Labor Day weekend on September 2, 2018 and it will serve as round 16 of 17 on the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule.

It will be the first time Indy cars have raced at PIR since the Champ Car World Series raced at the 1.97-mile road course in 2007.

The event will replace the race at Watkins Glen on the IndyCar schedule, and the entire IndyCar schedule will be revealed at the announcement this morning.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said the return of racing to Portland "will give us terrific global exposure, a great deal of revenue, new jobs and an exciting experience for race fans".

Mark Miles, the CEO of Hulman & Company which owns the Verizon IndyCar Series, said in a statement, "INDYCAR couldn't be more excited to again race in front of one of our strongest fan bases". Prior to that, CART or Champ Car events were held every year since 1984.
