Lonzo Ball Returns to Practice is Questionable for Friday

Lonzo Ball shoots during training camp on Oct. 12 2017. Lonzo Ball Returns to Practice is Questionable for Friday

"I hope not, but yeah, that's a possibility", Walton said when asked if Ball could miss the rest of the preseason. "The good thing for us is we do have a week from tomorrow's game to the (regular) season". "Obviously still a little bit of discomfort but I'm happy to be out here for the most part (of practice)". He did everything but participate in the five-on-five scrimmage that closed practice.

Ball said after practice that pushing off of that ankle is still troublesome and while he wants to play, the training staff will have the final say. "I feel like I could go out there and play".

Walton said Ball's injury is not worse than previously thought and that there has been no setback. We'll see if there's any swelling in the morning.

After doing light drills with assistant coach Miles Simon on Tuesday and Wednesday, Ball said "nothing has been wrong" with his ankle. The injury, initially described as "mild", swelled up and restricted Ball's lateral movement. While the Lakers will see how the point guard feels on Friday and that there could be a chance he returns to action, a source indicated that it is unlikely Ball plays. If Ball's ankle doesn't improve enough by the opener, however, the Lakers will play it safe. "It made no sense to try to have him play". "That's the ability to make everyone a threat on the court at all times".

"I think Tyler (Ennis) and AC (Alex Caruso) have done a nice job filling in", Walton said, "but that's a special skill that (Ball) has".

If Ball does not play Friday against the Clippers, he will have almost a week to get ready for the team's regular-season opener on October 19, against Blake Griffin and the Clippers.

The Lakers welcomed back a familiar face on Thursday.

He averaged 12.7 points and 7.3 rebounds with the then-Defenders last season, and contributed 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds to the Lakers' summer league entry that won the tournament championship in Las Vegas in July. Wear could be a candidate for the team's remaining two-way contract.
