President Kovind: Governors to have key role in New India dream

Kovind expressed confidence that governors and lieutenant governors would make important contributions in giving a new direction to development in their respective States.

"The Government of India has resolved to build a society that is safe and secure, prosperous, ensures opportunity for all, and is a leader in science and technology", Kovind said stressing that the time-frame for all this is just five years.

He pointed out that 69 per cent of universities in the country are under the purview of state governments, and 94 per cent of all college and university students study in these institutions. Kovind said in the "current paradigm of cooperative federalism", the obligation of governors to commit themselves to the welfare of people was more pronounced.

Besides, the Administrators of the UTs of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Lakshadweep are also attending the two-day event as special invitees.

The President had said that Governors can provide a new dimension to the development of their states by communicating with legislators and deliberating on subjects related to public well-being.

"The five years from 2017 to 2022 are devoted to the creation of New India, one that is free of corruption, poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition and unhygienic conditions", he said.

The President said technology can propel us to reach even hard and long-term goals, and help ensure access to quality public services for all citizens.

On the first day of the conference, two Union Ministers, Prakash Javadekar and Dharmendra Pradhan, gave presentations, which ensued into a discussion on the themes of "Higher Education in States" and "Skill Development and Entrepreneurship - Making Youth Employable".

Speaking at the same conference, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said governors should act as catalysts and facilitators in the process of change. The agenda of the conference has been shaped by the over-arching national mission to achieve "New India-2022".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India does not lack in ideas, resources and capabilities but certain states and regions have lagged behind due to a "governance deficit". In the concluding session, a brief report on the deliberations will be presented by the respective conveners.
