Newlyweds Carly and Matthew Lunn posted the photograph on Facebook, where it was quickly shared by thousands of people.

After the civil ceremony at the Greek Orthodox monastery on the island of Rhodes, the happy couple adopted a pose where the bride kneeled before her spouse, and appeared to perform oral sex in her wedding dress, as Matthew punched the air, with his trousers and underpants around his ankles.

Friends and family saw the amusing side, but those on the island did not.

Afterward, their social media included a snap, since taken down, of the bride on her knees in front of her new husband's groin, with the groom's bare butt in full view and his underwear around his ankles.

Giorgos Eleftheriou, president of the local Lindos community in Rhodes, told The Times: 'We are Greek and we cherish our traditions and the sanctity of our religious sites.

Hundreds of other British couples could have had their wedding plans cancelled after the pair staged a photograph as part of their portfolio of wedding photographs, in which the couple simulated a sex act.

"I have hundreds of soon-to-be brides from Britain and all over the world calling me in tears because of this decision".

"It was something we said we'd do for a joke", Carly said. Shame on those two for the damage they have done.

'We expected a lot of laughs and jokes from people but didn't expect it to be as popular as it was.

Metropolitan Kyrillos of Rhodes gave his decree for the monastery of St. Paul on Thursday, according to local media, saying that he can not allow "desecration" of the sacred site despite profit from hosting nuptials. It's a huge damper on our society here.

'People back in England were commenting on it, the whole thing went mad'. "We are one of the most famous wedding destinations in the world and we are booked solid through to 2021". Will they have done the same in their homeland; in front of a British chapel, a Jewish temple, a Muslim mosque? The situation was really that the local priest and Greek Orthodox Church and the mayor had no choice but to say there will be no further weddings - 99 percent of which are British.

"People are outraged and talking about suing the couple involved", he added.
