"Upon discovery, we launched a comprehensive investigation to understand what happened and how this occurred, including engaging leading third-party experts, payment card networks and authorities", he said.

Hyatt's admission comes three months after the breach took place and this is the second such breach suffered by the hotel chain in two years. The Hyatt hotels affected span the globe, with the majority, 18, located in China but also including Hyatt properties in Southeast Asia, South America and the United States.

It said that there had been "unauthorised access to payment card information from cards manually entered or swiped at the front desk of certain Hyatt-managed locations" between 18 March and 2 July 2017.

Floyd said that Hyatt's enhanced cybersecurity measures and additional layers of defense implemented over time had helped to identify and resolve the issue, but obiviously not before customer payment card data was impacted.

Hyatt Hotels has once again been the victim of a serious data breach, after it admitted that payment card details have been stolen from a number of its hotels.

'We have directly contacted all guests for whom we have appropriate and reliable contact information that used payment cards at affected hotels during the at-risk dates'.

It was the latest significant hack to target the hotel chain since its last data breach in December 2015.

The hotel chain said the incident affected payment card information - cardholder name, card number, expiration date and internal verification code - from cards manually entered or swiped at the front desk of certain Hyatt-managed locations.

The company says it is has implemented additional security measures to strengthen the security of its systems and that "Customers can confidently use payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide".

"As a result of implemented measures created to prevent this from happening in the future, guests can feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide", he said in the new statement this week. For more, see Hyatt's FAQ about the breach.

In October 2015 the Trump Hotel Collection confirmed a breach of its payment systems. In all, details stored by over 500 companies on Sabre Hospitality Solutions' Central Reservation system were breached.

Explaining the likely attack vector, Moore added that "in several public cases, adversaries will call the front desk complaining of an issue and send an email with supporting information, containing VBScript or macros that download malware and continue with password stealing and enabling remote desktop access".
