To do this, the fast food firm said on Monday (Oct 16) that it has set up a mobile phone locker at its Marine Cove outlet at East Coast Park, so customers can stow away their devices during mealtime.

Another initiative, which is also under McDonald's "Phone Off, Fun On" campaign, isn't doing too well either.

According to a survey of 302 parents conducted by McDonald's in Singapore, most (98%) say they use their mobile device whenever they're with family and more than two-thirds of them admitted using smartphones during meals.

"Based on our findings, we believe these new initiatives in our restaurants will nudge families towards rediscovering quality time together", said McDonald's Singapore's director for brand communications and customer care Linda Ming.

This is in spite of the fact that most of the parents surveyed expressed that the use of mobile devices had decreased their interaction with their loved ones.

As Fortune reported, a survey last month from McDonald's Singapore restaurant found that close to 72 percent of kids and 69 percent of adults use their phones during meals.

McDonald's said it was gathering feedback at the Marine Cove branch before deciding whether to expand the service to other outlets.

However, there are moves to make people stay longer in store, with a new table service option being added to the self-service kiosks, meaning that staff will bring food over to you.

In 2014, four Nanyang Technological University final-year students launched a campaign involving 13 eateries called Put It On Friend Mode.
