Researchers find link between lack of sleep and gestational diabetes

Lack of Sleep may increase the risk of gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes, a condition of impaired glucose tolerance in pregnancy, has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women by the American Heart Association.

A new study from the University of IL at Chicago revealed that pregnant women experiencing insufficient sleep are more likely to develop #Gestational diabetes than those who have an adequate amount of sleep.

Although the study reveals an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease for some women, the researchers said future data with continuous follow-ups are necessary to find more fully evaluate the long-term effects of gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is a condition that most often occurs in the second or third trimester and affects between three and seven percent of all pregnancies in the United States.

Most health care providers suggest that pregnant women undergo a blood sugar screening test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Therefore, an additional test is then needed to diagnose gestational diabetes.

The trial findings suggested the women who received a gestational diagnosis had a 43 per cent higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease if they did not eat healthily or exercise in the years following their pregnancy.

Mothers with gestational diabetes newborns tend to have high weights during birth.

For the study, researchers examined a history of gestational diabetes in almost 90,000 women of childbearing years who participated in the Nurses Health Study 2, finding that 5.9 percent, or about 5,300 participants, had gestational diabetes.

Aside from increased likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes may also raise the risk of high blood pressure and life-threatening preeclampsia.

For the study, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis of eight studies that assessed the relationship between sleep duration and gestational diabetes. For the study, researchers analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study II, an observational cohort study of USA female nurses established in 1989, with ongoing followup, following almost 90,000 women from pre-pregnancy for a median of about 26 years.
