On Tuesday Spain's top court ruled that the referendum was unconstitutional, adding legal weight to the government's efforts to block an attempt by the region to break away from Spain. It charged them with obstructing police investigations into the referendum on the region's independence from Spain that took place on October 1st.

Supporters of secession maintain the "Yes" vote won and Catalan officials have a mandate to declare independence.

Police say about 200,000 people took to the streets of Barcelona on Tuesday night to take part in the rally organized by the 2 groups.

Cuixart and Sanchez have been detained as figureheads of the separatist movement, with the pair being held without bail while they are investigated for sedition.

"We are facing an executive power in the state that uses the judiciary branch to block the legislative", Catalan government spokesman Jordi Turull told reporters shortly after the Constitutional Court ruling was announced. The judge ruled they were behind huge demonstrations September 20-21 in Barcelona that got in the way of a police operation created to prevent the referendum.

The demonstrators have flooded a main avenue, holding up candles, pro-independence "estelada" flags and chanted "political prisoners, freedom".

Meanwhile, Agusti Alcoberro, the man who standing in for Sanchez as head of the Assemblea Nacional Catalana, said peaceful protests would be the local response to what he said was the Spanish government's heavy-handed approach.
