Protest outside Supreme Court against ban on sale of crackers

India Tv- shraddha Kapoor trolled for backing'eco-friendly Diwali

CAIT national president B.C. Bhartia and secretary general Praveen Khandelwal argued that with the sale of fire crackers being a seasonal affair, most people involved in this work round the year and save money for this business which lasts only for about a fortnight.

Bagga, however, emphasised that he was not violating the Supreme Court's order banning the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR this Diwali.

The top court had by its November 11, 2016 order banned the sale and stocking of firecrackers, lifted the ban was lifted on September 12 this year, but, on a plea for the recall of the September 12 lifting order, the top court restored the ban till October 31, saying the September 12 order would come into operation from November 1. The Supreme Court's order to lift the ban on November 1 doesn't make sense.

Police team raided the premises and arrested one person named Vijay while crackers worth lakhs of rupees were seized, he said.

Under the order, the court had asked traders to utilize their existing stocks and not sell fresh stock. "Information was received that the two were selling crackers by the roadside". Five percent said that they already got crackers and will burn them, whereas 5% said they would like to burn crackers and know how to get them in spite of the ban being imposed.

While the apex court's October 9 order raised many an eyebrows, with the likes of author Chetan Bhagat, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and the Confederation of All India Traders Association, 55 per cent Delhiites supported the decision, while 35 per cent termed it "unfair".

However, a majority of people seemed indifferent to the ban and said a judicious mix of command and control measures is the key to protect public health as pollution levels have only been going up from year-to-year during Diwali and questioned the relevance of such bans, the survey, conducted as part of Assocham's corporate social responsibility initiative, said on Monday.

The apex court in 2005 had also directed that there should be a complete ban on bursting sound-emitting firecrackers between 10 PM and 6 AM.

A Diwali with colourful lamps and lights is a far better way to celebrate than with noisy and polluting firecrackers.
