Fernie Arena and nearby homes evacuated

WorkSafeBC says it's believed the three were workers at the arena.

Streets around the facility have been closed and officials say the site is secure.

Homes and businesses nearby were evacuated after the leak was reported, between Ninth and 13th streets and Highway 3 and Sixth Avenue.

Ruiter said the call came to his department as a medical call shortly before noon.

Mayor Mary Giuliano said the city spent much of Tuesday dealing with widespread power outages and wind.

Streets surrounding the arena are also under evacuation, and Emergency Social Services is being set up at the Senior Citizens Drop-in Centre, located at 562 3rd Avenue.

Team coach and general manager Craig Mohr said all arena users were safe but said he could not confirm any further details.

An ammonia at the Fernie Memorial Arena has resulted in multiple deaths in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The public is asked to avoid the area while crews deal with the situation.

The Ministry of Labour has confirmed WorkSafe BC has sent investigators.
