Three of their six other league games in December have also been moved, including the Merseyside derby (December 10) and the home clash with Swansea City (December 26).

Fixtures for the hectic December period have been released, with both Sky Sports and BT Sport announcing their televised Premier League matches.

Confirmation of the Christmas TV games is expected later today, with Everton-Chelsea also widely expected to be played on either the Friday or Saturday.

A statement from the league's organisers said: "There will be no Premier League fixtures on Sunday 24 December".

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore praised the "flexibility" of the United Kingdom broadcasters in their decision not to televise fixtures on December 24, despite it being in their contractual rights to do so.

The Premier League insisted supporters' feelings on festive fixtures were taken into account to reduce travel times for traditional Boxing Day and New Year's Day games.

"With matches scheduled on Christmas weekend for the first time in 11 years, the process of selecting games for live broadcast has been a more complex one than usual and I would like to thank our broadcast partners and clubs for their co-operation and flexibility".

But after feedback and the delaying of the announcement from the television rights holders - which will instead occur at 3pm on Thursday - Liverpool fans have been spared a Christmas Eve trek to the Emirates.

That led to pushback from the clubs and supporters' groups, as well as a threat by Arsenal ushers that they might decide not staff the match if the league went ahead with their plans.

The last Premier League game to take place on Christmas Eve was in 1995, when Leeds beat Manchester United 3-1.
