A man who sold set-top boxes loaded with Kodi software is set to be sentenced later today after admitting to facilitating piracy.

In the United Kingdom authorities' continuing crackdown on Kodi-related piracy, a British court is today expected to sentence a man after he admitted to selling boxes loaded with the software. It's worth noting here that Kodi is a legitimate media player with legitimate plugins, however, its open plugin system allows third parties to create plugins which can facilitate illegal activity.

Brian Thompson, 55, had initially denied the charges, setting up the prospect of a landmark court case.

Judge Armstrong said: 'If anyone was under any illusion as to whether such devices as these, fully loaded Kodi boxes, were illegal or not, they can no longer be in any such doubt.

Thompson had originally denied the offences, but later admitted one count of selling and one count of advertising devices "designed, produced or adapted for the goal of enabling or facilitating the circumvention of effective technological measures", at Teesside Crown Court.

Thompson has alleged that although he did sell the box, he believed that customers would have had to adapt the devices themselves to access paid-for content without paying.

He had said previously: "All I want to know is whether I am doing anything illegal".

'I'm prepared to accept what the court decides but at the moment as far as I'm concerned I'm not breaking the law'.

Police revealed Thompson's dealings when a diary was seized at his shop in Middlesbrough, CutPrice Tomo TVs, revealing 159 Kodi sales in four months, making him £17,000, reports the Gazette.
