Pollution Killed More Than war Famine and Natural Disasters in 2016

In 2016, this effectively took more than 920,000 people out of the global workforce. This count was higher than deaths caused by pollution emanating from coal power plants (accounting for 80,368 fatalities) and other industries (95,800 fatalities).

As per the report, the annual average of PM2.5 concentrations in India are 59g/m³ with a maximum measurement of 176g/m³ in Gwalior while according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) it should not exceed 10g/m.

PM2.5 (particulate matters less than 2.5 micron) is one of the deadliest components of air pollution.

The number of undernourished people in 30 countries across Africa and Asia rose to 422 million in 2016 from 398 million in 1990, it said.

"Increased access to clean fuels and clean energy technologies will have the dual benefit of reducing indoor air pollution exposure and cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions through the displacement of fossil fuels", the report said.

The report, which is funded through Wellcome's Our Planet, Our Health programme, highlights major health impacts that are already affecting millions of people.

The direct effects of climate change "result from rising temperatures and changes in the frequency and strength of storms, floods, droughts and heat waves - with physical and mental health consequences", it says.

The report warned that the incidence of dengue could rise with climate change and noted that there is a "striking increase of 3% and 5.9% in the vectorial capacity for the transmission of dengue due to climate trends, by just two types of mosquito since 1990".

Warming is exacerbating the spread of Dengue fever, the world's most rapidly expanding disease. We need urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change has caused severe harm to human health since the year 2000 by stoking more heat waves, the spread of some mosquito-borne diseases and under-nutrition as crops fail, scientists said on Tuesday. "The cost of inaction will be counted in preventable loss of life, on a large scale", said professor Anthony Costello, a director at the World Health Organization, in a statement.

It noted that there is no room for complacency and stated unavoidable increases in global temperature and the role of climate change as a threat multiplier and an accelerant of instability means numerous trends are expected to significantly worsen.

These impacts are disproportionately felt by the most vulnerable communities who are least responsible for climate change. "We can not simply adapt our way out of this, but need to treat both the cause and the symptoms of climate change", said professor Hugh Montgomery, director of the Institute for Human Health and Performance, University College, London.

Over 1 billion people will need to migrate within the next 90 years because of rising sea levels.
