Around 22% of jobs in the United Kingdom pay below the voluntary rate of £9.75 an hour in London and £8.45 in the rest of the United Kingdom, both well above the statutory national living wage of £7.50 for over 25-year-olds, said KPMG.

The so-called real living wage will increase by 4.6 per cent to £10.20 an hour in London and by 3.6 per cent to £8.75 in the rest of the country.

"It's thanks to the leadership of over 3,600 employers across the United Kingdom who are committed to paying all their staff, including cleaners and security staff, a real living wage".

Heathrow, which is among over 150 employers to agree recently to pay the higher rate, said 3,200 airport workers will be paid the voluntary living wage by 2020.

"The new living wage rates will bring relief for thousands of United Kingdom workers being squeezed by stagnant wages and rising inflation".

"It's even more appalling when you consider the average pay for a FTSE 100 boss is now over 300 times that of a minimum wage worker".

"Nine out of 10 accredited living wage employers report real benefits including improved retention, reputation, recruitment and staff motivation". Paying the London living wage is not only the action of a responsible organisation, but a successful one too. Millions of people are living in poverty despite being part of working households.

The foundation will announce new rates today.

"But more companies need to sign up".

"It's incredible to see so numerous UK's largest businesses refuse to pay their staff a living wage", said Dr Wanda Wyporska, the executive director of The Equality Trust.

Director of the Living Wage Foundation, Katherine Chapman, said that the living wage is necessary because it reflects the "real cost of living in the United Kingdom and London". "Numerous accredited employers I speak to tell me of the increased productivity and reduced staff turnover that they've experienced since signing up". I am determined to make London a fairer and more equal city, and the news that more than 1,500 businesses are paying the wage is a good step towards achieving that.

"London is one of the most dynamic and prosperous economies in the world, but unfortunately this prosperity isn't shared by all Londoners".
