Roy Halladay, the former Major League Baseball pitching star and two-time Cy Young victor, is reportedly dead after his plane crashed Tuesday afternoon into the Gulf of Mexico.

Halladay, who pitched for the Chiefs when they were the AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays in the late 1990s, was flying in his ICON A-5 aircraft, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The plane which crashed was a two-person plane, but the spokesperson said Halladay was the only person on the plane.

The Pasco Country sheriff's office confirmed the news in a press conference, saying that their "hearts and prayers go out to the family", and that Halladay was a personal friend.

The 40-year-old played for the Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies before retiring in 2013. He was the only victim in the crash. He finished in the top five in Cy Young voting five other times in a career that saw him establish himself as one of the foremost rotation workhorses in the game.

Halladay, an avid pilot, was featured in an October 12 article on ICON Aircraft's website that shows Halladay posing next to his ICON A5. Halladay joined Don Larsen of the New York Yankees as the only pitchers to throw playoff no-hitters as the Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. He won 203 games with a 3.38 ERA and won the Cy Young in 2003 and 2010.

This is a developing story.
