Buhari needs you to succeed’ — new SGF tells federal lawmakers

Dogara cleared the air while welcoming the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, in his office on Monday in Abuja.

Mr. Mustapha said the visit was to solicit the support of the Senate in delivering the campaign promises of President Muhammadu Buhari. To extend a hand of friendship.

He explained that to diversify the economy, bills must come from the National Assembly and be debated upon and eventually return to the President for assent.

Mustapha, who met with the leaderships of the Senate and the House of Representatives separately, pointed out that President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, was instrumental to the success of the All Progressives Congress and Buhari at the 2015 general elections.

Responding, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara said that the House is ready to work with the Executive arm of government, saying that "if this government fails, we all fail".

"So, this is basically to come and assure you that in every area that you are soliciting the cooperation of the Presidency, being the Secretary to the Government, I would ensure that the National Assembly receives that cooperation because, jointly, if we work together, whatever has been lost in the past, we can quickly redeem and recover and make progress, so that by the time the first four-year mandate that we received comes to an end, we can show on our scorecard that these were the promises we made".

He however said that the coming of the new SGF to the National Assembly was unprecedented, "where the SGF will on his own come to the House without summon... It's bringing a new face of cooperation between the executive and the legislature, to our democracy and the government".

He added that "this is because none of the three-pronged approach of the president - security, diversification and fight against corruption - can be achieved if we do not receive the support of the National Assembly".

"After my assumption, because you are a strategic partner, I decided that the first point of call will have to be the National Assembly", the SGF said.

"Let me single out not for any reason, the Speaker".

"You were the nominee of the House of Reps in that committee and we worked for months to put up a convention and a selection process that was adjudged to be the best ever in this country".

"It is a big menace that has constituted a source of embarrassment and we can't fight insurgency unless we put machinery on ground that requires the support of the National Assembly".

He however told the Speaker that, " you're part of the process through which President Muhammadu Buhari emerge as our candidate in 2015, now that you're the Speaker you must nurture the same process that you started ".

He further thanked the leadership of the House of Representatives for standing with the government of President Buhari.

He said the National Assembly is not a competitor to the federal executives, but "joint owners of this enterprise".
