Egypt's el-Sissi warns Iran to stop "meddling" in region

"I am not for war. We have had our experience with war" Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi said about Iranian Saudi tensions when asked about his country's stance

"The subject is not about taking on or not taking on, the subject is about the status of the fragile stability in the region in light of the unrest facing the region", Sisi told CNBC in an interview when asked if Egypt would consider its own measures against Hezbollah.

Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia blamed Iran for a missile fired toward its capital by rebels in Yemen and warned that could be considered an act of war. "Do you want a female prime minister?"

"The region can not support more turmoil", he said.

"Our point of view when it comes to new troubles with either Iran or Hezbollah or any other issue is that we have to deal with great care so as not to add to the challenges and troubles of the region", El-Sisi said Wednesday in a news briefing in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

"I am against war, we can resolve crises with dialogue", el-Sissi said when asked about the possibility of war with Iran or Hezbollah.

He stressed that the security of the Gulf is part and parcel of Egypt's security.

In a meeting with a group of journalists, Sisi also pledged support for Saudi Arabia in its stand-off with Iran.

Saudi officials also accused Iran's Lebanese ally Hezbollah of "declaring war".

"Conditions in Saudi Arabia are totally stable and I have confidence in the government's handling of the situation", el-Sissi said during the two-hour news conference held on the sidelines of an worldwide gathering of youths convened under the Egyptian leader's patronage.

El-Sisi reiterated his support for Saudi Arabia, one of Egypt's closest allies, saying that "the security of the Gulf is a red line".

Sisi called for the cooling of tensions in the region, "but not at the expense of the security and stability of the Gulf", he said.

Egypt has since 2014 purchased Rafale fighter jets and helicopter carriers from France, MiG-29 fighter jets and assault helicopters from Russian Federation and submarines from Germany.
